How to play Feetle Word Game

Feetle Word Game is a free daily word ladder: change one letter at a time and turn today's four-letter word into FEET. The puzzle board is at the top of this page; today's start word, hints, and full answer archive follow.

  1. Start with today's word. Every day has one start word and everyone gets the same puzzle (OLEO → FEET).
  2. Change one letter. Each new word must be exactly one letter different from the one before — change one letter and keep the other three in place.
  3. Reach FEET. Use real four-letter words and finish on FEET. Fewer steps is better; par is the shortest possible route.

Example: SEED → FEED → FEET. One letter changes per step, and lime tiles already match FEET.

The rules in full

  • Four letters. Every guess is exactly four letters long.
  • Real words only. Feetle uses a bundled dictionary of 2552 common English four-letter words.
  • One letter changes. Each new word must differ from the previous one in exactly one position; letters cannot be added, removed, or reordered.
  • Par is the shortest route. Your score is steps and par; the difference is your extra steps.
  • A new puzzle daily. The next start word goes live at 08:00 UTC.

What is a word ladder?

A word ladder turns one word into another by changing a single letter at each step. Every rung must be a real word.

Lewis Carroll invented the puzzle in 1877 and called it Doublets. His best-known example runs HEAD, HEAL, TEAL, TELL, TALL, TAIL: five moves, each one letter apart, every word real.

The rules are simple: one letter per step, real words only, shortest route wins. Detours are often part of the shortest path, because moving away from the target can unlock a letter you need later.

Word ladder, word chain, Doublets

It has also been sold as word golf, laddergrams, and word chains. Daily versions fix the length at four letters so a puzzle takes a minute or two.

How Feetle uses it

Feetle fixes the target at FEET and changes the start word every day at 08:00 UTC, so everyone solves the same ladder with the same par. The archive below keeps every route published so far.

Feetle tips and strategy

  • Work backwards from FEET. Every solution ends one letter away from FEET. Words like FEED, FEEL, MEET, and FELT are common final moves.
  • Accept short detours. The shortest route sometimes steps away from FEET to unlock a letter, so do not reject a word for having few correct letters.
  • Keep the double E in mind. FEET has two Es. Words such as SEED, FEEL, MEET, and BEEF keep you close to the shape of the target.
  • Undo instead of restarting. A wrong turn is cheap: Undo removes the last word and leaves the rest of your ladder intact.
  • Spend hints wisely. Each puzzle allows two in-game hints: the first gives the opening letter of the next shortest-path word, the second reveals that word.
  • Think one move ahead. Before you submit, ask which words your new word can reach. Common patterns leave more exits than one-off oddities.
